Multiple pathways towards a T1D diagnosis with MacKenzie Williams

Manuela Battaglia and colleagues recently published a compelling article in Diabetes Care, wherein she argues in favor of moving away from the traditional “single disease” approach in type 1 diabetes. Instead, she proposes that we conceptualize type 1 diabetes as a group of disorders, which may each have unique underlying causes. Last year, Leeana Peters and colleagues published a review article in Clinical & Experimental Immunology that sheds light on emerging technologies that can potentially aid in the characterization of underlying mechanisms driving disease. I am excited to see how this shift toward more individualized treatment informs future clinical trials.
